Impromptu Amputee Beach Tips

Jennifer Latham Robinson

Impromptu Amputee Beach Tips:

If a prosthetic limb is left in a hot car, the heat can melt & warp the plastic.

There are prosthetic limbs designed for use in water.  After use, don't forget to turn the prosthesis upside down when rinsing.  Water and sand can get trapped.

There are protective covers meant to insulate a prosthesis from water, even when the prosthesis is totally submerged.  The company ''Dry-Pro'' makes a good one.

Some prosthetic limbs float in the water.  I find this particularly humorous when I'm wearing one.

Forearm crutches are often hollow and fill up with sand and ocean water.

   Crutches sink in the sand.

It hurts to hop on sea shells.

Salt makes metal things rust, so rinse well.

People stare at you more if you are constantly looking around to see if people are staring at you.

Residual limbs require lots of strong sunscreen (for healed limbs only)

The ocean heals my body and my mind.

Floating in water is liberating for me.

If anyone has any thoughts on the beach, please share..

Yes, residual limbs do take alot of sunscreen mine I cover up totally! Crutches sink in the sand and there you are! I have never worn a prostethic in the shower or at the beach. I have always been afraid of being struck by lightning with my leg for some odd reason. Can this happen? Gloria
