Prosthesis for Toe Amputation
I was recently asked by a member of 360 O&P what I would recommend for a person that just had 3 toes amputated. This was my response and thought it may help other people inquiring.
Normally, when I am evaluating a person with this type of amputation, I want to know what is most important to you. For example, 1. Which toes are amputated? The big toe is the most important for extended lever arm. 2. Does it effect the way you walk now? 3. What is more important, function or cosmesis? 4. Is there any pain at the amputation site? 5. Do you walk barefoot or do you normally wear shoes? Once I know the answers to these questions, I can design a product that is as simple as a foot orthotic with toe extensions to something as lifelike using silicone restoration techniques as you would see in the movies.
