“Power to the Planet” campaign for Element Skateboards

While shooting the “Power to the Planet” campaign for Element Skateboards last October I was also introduced to a shoe company called TOMS. Jardine one of the campaign organizers and the ELEMENT EDEN director brought out a box of brightly colored flat shoes called TOMS for all of the advocates to where during their shoot. I was instantly drawn to the patterns and colors on the shoes and pulled out a pair of black, bright pink and white “special edition” Element TOMS. My eyes and my feet instantly fell in love with them. I also imagine that they are quite comfortable, although I wouldn’t really know since I haven’t felt me feet since I lost them , but I can certainly say that mentally they made me very comfortable. What’s unique about these shoes is that they are really fashionable with multiple color ways and patterns. You can get plane black or black and white striped. You can get yellow and red ones or yellow and red polka dots. What an awesome way to dress up a pair of jeans, a dress or shorts! Think black dress with yellow striped TOMS. Nobody will be looking at your metal legs because they will be so focused on your shoes! Or maybe it’s the other way around, maybe everyone will be looking at your leg because they can’t help but to stare at your super cute shoes, either way these are not something to pass up. The most awesome part of TOMS is not just how ridiculously adorable the shoes are, but how philanthropic the company is. TOMS motto is “For every pair that’s purchased TOMS will give a pair to a child in need” well I have to say, It can’t get any better then that! The perfect motivation to shop, they certainly knew how to reel me in!

These days I wear TOMS with everything! Having Prosthetic legs, I love how easy they are to slip on, how lightweight they are and how perfect they go with my legs. I don’t know about you guys, but I’m a little particular when it comes to my metal robot legs and my fashion sense, it all has to work together if you know what I mean, and with TOMS it does.

The one thing that may be a concern to some amputees is that they are really flat, so you will need to either have your prosthetist set your foot flat or put a wedge in your heel. That is the only issue some amputees may face. A positive thing is that you will never ever slip in them even if you are walking on a sheet of ice! This is wonderful for people like me who are clueless to what there feet are up to. Living in Lake Tahoe this winter I found myself walking on sheets of ice and not slipping. To tell you the truth I couldn’t slip in these if I wanted to! Whatever material the sole is made from grips the ice. This is particularly wonderful if you just don’t want to take your TOMS off even in the winter. I mean if your like me, your feet don’t get cold anyways. Another thing I discovered is how sturdy they are. For being so lightweight and simple, they really hold up well. In December I actually hiked the Mayan Ruins in them after I forgot to pack hiking shoes. Now I’m not saying they were the best shoe to hike through the jungle in, but they did the job and held up well!

So for me I think these shoes are the answer to my question “What shoes do I wear that are fashionable, sturdy, comfortable and look good with my prosthetic legs?” The answer is TOMS.
