O&P Facility

Place where orthotic or prosthetic patient care is provided.

Open end socket

Prosthetic socket with an open (non-suction) distal end.

Orthopaedist

Surgeon who corrects congenital or functional abnormalities of the bones with surgery, casting, and bracing.

Orthosis, (Orthoses)

Custom-fabricated or custom-fitted brace or support designed to align, correct, or prevent neuromuscular or musculoskeletal dysfunction, disease, injury, or deformity. Note: this does not include supports or devices carried in stock and sold by drug and other stores, corset shops or surgical supply facilities (e.g., fabric and elastic supports, corsets, arch supports, trusses, elastic hose, canes, crutches, cervical collars, dental appliances).

Orthotic (adj.)

The science and practice of evaluating, measuring, designing, fabricating, assembling, fitting, adjusting, or servicing an orthosis under a prescription from a licensed physician, chiropractor, or podiatrist to correct or alleviate neuromuscular or musculoskeletal dysfunction, disease, injury, or deformity.

Orthotic band

Medio-lateral reinforcement bands in orthoses.

Orthotics

The science and clinical service dealing with identifying clinical indication for orthotic treatment and the design, manufacture, fitting as well as clinical/technical maintenance as pertaining to orthoses.

Orthotist

Licensed person that measures, designs, fabricates, fits, or services orthoses as prescribed by a licensed physician, and who assists in the formulation of an orthosis to support or correct disabilities.

Osteoarthritis

Degenerative change in cartilage and bone of joints.

Osteoarthrosis

A condition caused by wear and tear that causes inflammation of the joint, swelling, pain, and limitation of free motion.

Osteochondritis

Inflammation of bone and cartilage.

Osteochondrosis

Degeneration of cartilage and bone.

Osteogenesis imperfecta

(hereditary) Disease, extreme brittleness of long bones.

Osteomyelitis

Inflammation of the interior of the bone.

Osteo-myoplastic

Osteoplasty

Restoration, repair, plastic surgery of bones.

Osteosclerosis

Hardening of bones.

Osteotomy

Surgical cutting of bones (for re-alignment purposes).

Osteotomy
