Sterno-Occipital Mandibular Immobilizer (SOMI)

SOMI
The Somi orthosis is designed to apply forces under the chin and occiput to restrict flexion and extension, as well as, rotation of the head and neck. It
consists of the chin piece which will support your lower jaw.

The headband straps across the forehead fitting into the plastic device at the back of your head.  The headband is used whenever the chin piece is removed, i.e. eating, bathing, shaving, etc. A chest piece rests on your chest and connects to the chin and occipital piece, then occipital piece supports the base of your head.

Your orthotist will provide specific instructions as to alternating the chin piece and head band.

ASSOCIATED CONDITIONS

§          Cervical strain/sprain

§          Cervical injury

WEARING PROTOCOL

Your physician and orthotist will give you specific instructions as to wearing protocol based on your unique circumstances.

DON AND DOFF INSTRUCTIONS

Follow your physician and orthotists specific instructions.

CARE

Daily skin care consisting of cleansing and inspection is very important to avoid any problems.  A sponge bath is usually the easiest to achieve.  Areas in direct contact with the brace may need more frequent cleansing.

In particular, watch for the areas of the skin that receive pressure, such as chin, jaw line, shoulders or back of head.  Report any redness, blisters, bruises, etc. immediately to your orthotist and physician.

SUGGESTIONS

Wear a cotton shirt under the orthosis.  A front button shirt is recommended over the brace to afford easier access to the chin piece.
