Corey Haim in the Silver Bullet... A 'Disabled' Girl's Dream

Jennifer Latham Robinson

I was one of many young girls who had a gigantic crush on Corey Haim.  Though I didn't really follow his career once I passed that stage of teen-dream-idolizing, I clearly remember the acting role that drove me into my prepubescent frenzy.  It's a role that hasn't really been mentioned much since his recent death.  In 1985, Corey Haim played a young man who unwittingly unmasks a neighbor's true identity... a werewolf.

I saw Stephen King's film, Silver Bullet, so many times that I could recite every line.  Corey Haim's character was paralyzed from the waist down in this film, the result of an accident that is only vaguely mentioned at the film's start.  When I first saw this movie, I had no idea who Corey Haim was.  As a young girl who had spent some time in a wheelchair and her entire life using assistive devices, I was thrilled to see a 'disabled' hero... and a cute one.

Haim's portrayal was very realistic to me.  His graceful physical struggles... the subtle frustrations... his satisfaction at conquering the 'demon'... It was all so fascinating and familiar.  At one point his uncle surprises him with a custom-made mack-daddy chair... 'the silver bullet'.  It looked more like a motorcycle.  How I wanted that chair.

Haim's character finally defeated the demon at the end.  Without his chair, unable to get away, cornered in his living room, the boy delivers the final silver bullet into the wolf and wins the battle.  I remember being somewhat dissappointed when I found out that Haim wasn't really 'disabled'... that it was all acting.  Or was it?
