Insight into a Hobby: Snowboarding with a prosthetic knee

Mark Profeta

This past winter break I was fortunate enough to be able to go home to Buffalo for the holidays. I know Buffalo does not seem as appealing as Florida to most people in the middle of winter but going back to Buffalo allows me to go snowboarding, which has been my favorite hobby for the past 12 years. But, being in Florida obviously limits my participation so this was the first time in over a year I got to go and I had a great time.

Over the break one of my friends sent me a you tube link(www.youtube.com/watch) of a transfemoral amputee snowboarding, which he thought was really cool and asked if that’s what I do. But, after watching that video it lead me to watch a few more videos of other transfemoral amputees snowboarding and from watching these videos I noticed something in common, most of them were snowboarding with the prosthesis as the front foot on the snowboard. From my experience as a snowboard instructor and many years of snowboarding I know that foot in the front of the board tends to offer most of the control of the board. In my eyes it would be better to have the sound leg as the front foot on the board so that you can have the movements available needed to control the board to the optimal level. But, I am also not an amputee and do not have any training with adaptive snowboarding, so I am curious if there is an advantage from snowboarding with the prosthesis forward or if it is just personal choice, anyone that has some insight please leave some feedback.

That is great that you are interested in trying to get back out there and back into sports, I think it is important to try and stay active. In terms of getting into adaptive sports one of the best contacts to talk to is your prosthetist. It is a good idea to let him/her know that you are interested in participating in sports so that they know what kind of stresses you will putting on your prosthesis. And they may also know someone that is involved with adaptive sports in the area. I know Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) is a good resource for helping you come up with funds to possibly get a sports specific prosthesis, like a running leg. But there are plenty of organizations out there that deal with many different sports to help amputees like yourself, they are there you just need to find them. Also, that is great you are looking at getting into the field, the best of luck. -Mark

I'm also a transfemoral amputee and I am so inspired by that video. I've never boarded and especially after my accident, I was unsure that it would be possible for me to do any sports again. But with time and slowly gaining my confidence back, I'm wanting to get out there and see what I can do. Currently, I'm getting things done in school in hopes of transferring to St. Pete College for the O&P program next yeart. I'm still unsure exactly as to what I want to do, but I know I want to help people out there like me and educate others and give support wherever needed. Just wanted to say hello and thank you for sharing this. If you know of any contacts dealing with adaptive sports, please let me know...I'm searching!
