Positive Changes in Aetna Prosthetic Policy!

Aetna is finally changing prosthetic policy.... for the better!

This month, June of 2009, Aetna has finally changed its position statement on microprocessor knees and myoelectric hands.  These items are no longer considered investigational or experimental and, though they will be subject to coverage guidelines and medical review, will be considered for coverage.

This is a huge boost for amputees covered by Aetna, and for providers wanting to provide the care.

Unfortunately, Aetna does still consider the VASS pump (Vacuum Assisted Socket System, L5781) experimental and this is excluded from coverage (http://www.aetna.com/cpb/medical/data/600_699/0630.html).  Aetna plans on reviewing this position statement on 09/10/2009.
