The Halo cervical orthosis provides the greatest control of all other cervical bracing systems. The brace encircles the skull and secured with fixation pins that penetrate the outer table of the skull. There are adjustable distraction rods that are attached to the Halo and shoulder bars with attachment to a distal fixation device, i.e. vest or body jacket.
This orthosis immobilizes the head and cervical spine
The halo system consists of a graphite composite ring, traction bail, head pins, positioning pads. superstructure, vest and liner. Most halo systems now are MRI/CT (magnetic resonance imaging/computerized tomography) compatible.
Normally, the halo system is applied by your physician and a certified orthotist. The length of wearing time will depend on your physician and the trauma involved.
ASSOCIATED CONDITIONS

DON AND DOFF
Your physician and orthotist must control any don or doff of the orthosis.
CARE
You should have frequent halo checks by your orthotist and you should receive written instructions as to care.
These instructions should include good hygienic methods in particular to the pin sites.
